Third Confirmed PED Diagnosis For Ontario For July

It's safe to say Ontario is seeing a spike in confirmed PED diagnosis this month.

We're up to 3 so far in July - the latest, a Lambton County farrow-to-finish operation.

That's after only one confirmed cases in each of the months of April, May and June.

Ontario Pork has released an update on it's PED plant surveillance program.

That program was started in May of last year, focusing on federal processors.

The program detected only 1 positive result in some 15 hundred samples over the last 3 months.

The surveillance program has recently increased focus on provincial processing plants and abattoirs.

Ontario Pork says 16 per cent of the over 800 samples from those locations have tested positive for PED.

Seven of the 10 positive plants have links to positive farms, assembly or yard sites.

Three had only one or two positives with no subsequent positives.

And after installing new biosecurity procedures, three plants are testing negative.
