Getting A Handle On Cost Of Producing Goat Milk

Ontario Goat has completed it's Dairy Goat Cost Of Production pilot study.

The study suggests the cost of production for one standard litre of goat milk is a dollar 36 point 8.

That's based on a random sampling of data from 14 licensed Ontario dairy goat farms throughout last year.

The top three overall costs are feed, interest on debt and labour.

Ontario Goat President Anton Slingerland says there are a number of first-time farmers entering the industry.

He points out dairy goat farmers don't have the same knowledge transfer from generation to generation that other commodities have.

Ontario Goat hopes this study will give producers a solid understanding of the costs associated through the production cycle.

Vice-President Eldon Bowman suggests significant investments need to be made by industry, government and producers to help reduce the cost of production.

Bowman says those investments are needed in areas like animal health and welfare as well as farm business management.
