NFU Suggests Supply Management More Valuable Than TPP

The President of the National Farmers Union says trade will not stop if the Trans Pacific Partnership is not signed.

Jan Slomp is raising concerns about the TPP's potential impact on Canada's supply management system for dairy and poultry.

He calls it an innovative solution where Canadian dairy farmers do not have to rely on government subsidies to make their living.

Slomp argues that is what happens in Europe and the U-S.

The NFU president says those who would put the TPP ahead of supply management have some serious questions to answer.

Those include how reliable the supply of imported milk would be, at what price and what kind of quality standards could consumers expect.

For Slomp - the picture is uninviting at best, if not dangerous and bleak.
