Ontario Farmers Face Second-Highest Farm Input Cost Increase In Canada

The cost of farm inputs in Canada was 0 point 4 per cent lower in the first quarter of 2015 from the previous quarter.

Statistics Canada says a 4 point 2 per cent drop in machinery and motor vehicle costs led the decline.

Crop production, animal production and general business costs were all higher in the first quarter.

Compared to a year ago, farm input prices were up 2 point 7 per cent.

A 13 point 6 per cent increase in animal production costs led the way in that year-over-year increase.

Statscan says Ontario farm input prices were up 1 per cent in the first quarter of this year from the last quarter of 2014.

They were 4 point 1 per cent higher than a year ago.

That year-over-year increase was second only to an 8 point 3 per cent year-over-year increase in farm input prices in B-C among the Canadian provinces.
