Ritz: UPOV 91 Part Of Reason For New Wheat Seed Development Partnership

Not everyone likes the fact that Canada has ratified UPOV 91 - an international treaty involving plant breeders rights.

Some, like the NFU, argue it gives international seed companies too much power and control.

But Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz says it's one of the reasons for a new strategic research partnership between Canterra Seeds and Group Limagrain of France.

The partnership will be based in Saskatoon.

It's going to be working on developing and testing new and advanced cereal varieties, with a particular focus on wheat.

Ritz says partnerships like this create new research and trade opportunities that further invigorate Canada's modern, competitive wheat industry.
