Regional Corn, Soybean Crops Variable So Far - Edible Beans In Trouble

OMAFRA agrologists say this year's edible bean crop is in very poor shape.

Up to 25 per cent of the crop has not been planted and another 25 per cent will need to be replanted - if time and seed are available.

Corn in Western Ontario is variable.

The fields that were hit by frost apparently haven't recovered as well as expected.

It's still not certain whether corn fields in low-lying areas that were hit with two frosts and complete flooding will survive.

The OMAFRA Field Crop Team points out fields in good crop rotation have done much better than fields in a poor rotation.

The soybean crop is also variable.

Growers who decided to replant those fields that were severely impacted by frost this year appear to have made the right decision, based on the way those fields have responded.

Although there has been some lodging from heavy winds and rains, early planted spring cereals are generally looking excellent.

At last report, Agricorp had about 19 hundred damage reports - most from water damage to soybeans and edible beans.

About 86 thousand acres of soybeans and 23 thousand acres of corn have been reported with some damage.
