U-S Pig Crop 8% Higher In Second Quarter

The United States hog inventory on June 1st was up 9 per cent from a year ago at 66 point 9 million head.

The USDA says the breeding inventory was up 1 per cent from last year while the market hog inventory was up 9 per cent.

The March to May 2015 U-S pig crop was 29 point 6 million head - up 8 per cent from 2014.

The USDA reports the average pigs saved per litter in that quarter was a record for the March to May period at 10.37.

Looking ahead - the department says U-S hog producers plan to have 3 per cent fewer sows farrow in the June-August quarter compared to a year ago.

Intended U-S farrowings for the September to November quarter are down 4 per cent from 2014's actual farrowings.
