USDA Lowers 2015 Total Meat Production Estimate

The USDA has lowered it's forecast for total meat production in the U-S this year and raised it's 2016 forecast.

The department says this year's beef production will be lower than forecast a month ago.

However, increased placements of cattle later this year are expected to lead to higher beef slaughter numbers next year.

Pork production for 2015 is expected to be higher because of higher-than-expected second quarter slaughter.

The USDA has reduced it's cattle price forecast by a dollar at the top end to between 159 and 165 dollars per hundred for this year.

It's 2016 price forecast is now from 155 to 168 dollars per hundred - down a dollar at both ends from last month's forecast.

The department's 2015 barrows and gilts price forecast is now from 49 to 51 dollars per hundred - up a dollar from last month's forecast.

And the USDA is leaving it's 2016 price forecast unchanged at between 44 and 48 dollars per hundred.
