OMAFRA Says Southwest Corn, Soybeans Looking Good So Far

The corn and soybean crops in the province's southwest are generally looking good so far this year.

The OMAFRA Field Crop Team says there was some frost damage - including to cereal crops such as winter wheat and rye.

The team expects frost will result in variable stands for some fields this year.

The winter wheat crop in the southwest is at or quickly approaching head emergence.

OMAFRA points out that means Fusarium fungicide application timing is near.

Agricorp is reporting damage claims from 212 producers involving over 27 thousand acres in the Southwest region - most of them for soybeans.

Most of the reported soybean damage is from excessive rainfall, followed closely by frost for soybeans.
