Canadian, U-S Hog Slaughter Up Over 2014

Federally-inspected Canadian plants have slaughtered more hogs so far this year while our exports of live hogs to the U-S are way up from a year ago.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reports hog slaughter to May 23rd is up 3 point 3 per cent from last year.

Exports of live hogs to the U-S are up almost 14 per cent from this time in 2014.

Total pork product exports so far this year are down 1 point 1 per cent while imports to the end of March are up 7 point 2 per cent.

U-S hog slaughter last week was 1 point 856 million head, up 6 and a half per cent from a year ago.

Year to date hog slaughter is up almost 6 per cent from 2014.

The University of Missouri's Ron Plain says the U-S national average negotiated carcass price for direct delivered hogs was $77.48 per hundredweight.

That's a dollar higher than the previous week but almost 29 dollars lower than a year ago.
