Soybeans Frosted? Give Them Time

Soybean growers are being encouraged to show patience in assessing their fields for possible frost damage.

OMAFRA specialists suggest growers wait 3-5 days before assessing damage, watching for new growth.

There's some concern about the activation of pre-emerge herbicides in the corn crop.

Many of those herbicides need 12 to 18 millimeters of rain to activate - and there hasn't been a lot of rain in many parts of the region so far this growing season.

OMAFRA is reporting corn planting is essentially completed with soybean planting up to 80 per cent done.

Emergence for both crops has been good to generally good.

Alfalfa is expected to be ready for first cut later next week into the first week of June in the south west part of the province.

And Agricorp is still getting calls with wheat damage claims.

Over 11 hundred in total.

Lambton County has the highest number of crop damage claims.

Nine young volunteers aged 11 to 17 spent three days exploring and protecting the Lake Huron coastline during the Coastal Conservation Youth Corps' inaugural program in Grand Bend from July 21 to 23.
