Canadian, U-S Hog Slaughter Higher In 2015

The number of hogs slaughtered in federal inspected plants in Canada is up 3 per cent so far this year from last.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada says almost 700 thousand animals have been slaughtered so far this year.

Ontario's federal and provincial slaughterings to May 2nd are up 0 point 6 per cent from last year

The department is reporting a 1 point 1 per cent drop in exports of fresh, frozen and processed pork to the end of March.

Our producers had shipped almost 15 per cent more live hogs to the U-S this year, up to April 25th.

The Ron Plain Hog Outlook from the University of Missouri says U-S hog slaughter last week was just over 2 million head.

That's down 2 point 2 per cent from the previous week but up over 5 per cent from the same week last year.

The report has last week's negotiated carcass price at 77.50 per hundredweight, up 4.55 from the previous week.

Plain says while U-S domestic pork demand was up 13 per cent in March, export demand was down 26 per cent.
