More Maple Leaf Losses - But Getting Smaller

Maple Leaf Foods posted a net loss from continuing operations in the first quarter of 2 point 8 million dollars.

That's a significant improvement over the company's 124 point 6 million dollar loss in the first quarter of last year.

Maple Leaf says it's Meat Products Group benefited from price increases in the prepared meats business and improved export margins in the fresh pork business.

That group posted adjusted operating earnings of 7 point 9 million dollars, compared to a 27 point 4 million dollar loss last year.

Maple Leaf's Agribusiness Group posted adjusted operating earnings of 2 point 5 million in the quarter, up from a 0 point 3 million dollar loss last year.

The company says it's hog production operations benefited from higher hog prices, offset by the added costs of dealing with PED.

CEO Michael McCain says the final production run at the company's last closing legacy facilities wrapped up this week, marking the end of what Maple Leaf calls it's duplicative supply chain network.

McCain says bringing their new state of the art facilities to full operational effectiveness will keep the company on tract to reach it's strategic financial target.
