Ontario Starting To Look At Standardized Maple Syrup Labelling

Consultations are expected to begin soon on new, standardized labelling for Ontario maple syrup.

Ontario Maple Syrup Producers President Ray Bonenberg says the proposed labels are already being adopted by most of the other maple syrup producing regions in North America.

The new labels will replace the 8 or 9 different standards the industry has been dealing with across those regions.

Bonenberg says it's taken some lobbying, but the provincial government has agreed to start the consultation process to bring those labels to Ontario.

The new standards are based on colour and include taste descriptors.

Bonenberg says the industry is hopeful the new labelling will be in place in Ontario by next year's sugar season.

Most other maple syrup producing jurisdictions are already moving to the new labels.

Bonenberg says until the North American industry started adopting standardized labels the industry was working 8 or 9 different standards.

He says the labels will replace the 8 or 9 different labelling standards the industry has been dealing with in the 13 to 14 American states and 4 provinces producing maple syrup.
