A Woodstock-area turkey farm and a neighbouring farm are both under quarantine today.
That after tests confirmed the presence of H5 avian influenza on the turkey farm.
Those tests were conducted April 5th after the farm experienced the sudden death of a number of birds over several days.
Further testing is being done to determine the precise subtype and strain of the virus and to confirm how severe it is.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says all the birds on the infected premises will be humanely euthanized and disposed of.
Once all the birds have been removed, the CFIA will oversee the cleaning and disinfection of the barns, vehicles, equipment and tools to eliminate any infectious material that may remain.
Turkey farmers across Ontario have been notified to adopt enhanced biosecurity practices.
CFIA emphasizes avian influenza does not pose a risk to food safety as long as poultry and poultry products are properly handled and cooked.
The agency also says avian influenza rarely affects humans who do not have consistent contact with infected birds.
