Ontario Government Ministers Highlite Farm Safety Week

Ontario Agriculture Minister Jeff Leal says a farm that makes worker safety a priority is an asset to the provincial economy.

March 15th to the 21st is the 10th annual Canadian Agricultural Safety Week.

Farm injuries in Ontario cost an estimated 116 million dollars a year, including health care costs and loss of productivity.

OMAFRA and the provincial Ministry of Labour remind farmers they can improve farm safety by providing employees with proper agricultural equipment and machinery training.

Following safe farm vehicle procedures - including proper lighting, speed limits and appropriate signalling - can also cut down on injuries.

Farmers and farm workers are also encouraged to take breaks from repetitive work and long hours and to familiarize themselves with heat stress and how to prevent it.

Agriculture Minister Jeff Leal points out Canadian Agricultural Safety Week is a chance to reflect on the importance of farm safety and provide producers with the resources needed to help make their farms safer.
