Labelling Concerns Worry Ontario Maple Syrup Producers

Ray Bonenburg says the provincial government is putting Ontario's maple syrup industry at a competitive disadvantage.

Bonenburg is president of the Ontario Maple Syrup Producers.

He says the province is dragging it's feet on new labelling standards being adopted by the major North American maple syrup regions.

The new labelling includes both colour and taste descriptors.

Bonenburg says that makes it clearer for consumers.

He says the provincial government has yet to give his organisation a solid reason for not wanting to make the changes.

According to Bonenburg, the Ontario maple syrup industry is worth 53 million dollars a year to the provincial economy.

He says not moving to the new North American labelling system will hurt the sector's ability to market it's product effectively.

Bonenburg says the province seems to be unwilling to go along with labelling changes being adopted across North America.
