No Significant Short-Term Beef Breeding Herd Expansion Expected

Canfax Manager Brian Perillat says 2014 brought enthusiasm back to the beef industry.

In a commentary posted on the Farm Credit Canada website, Perillat suggested everything aligned for the industry this year.

He's a little surprised by the fat cattle export numbers, which he says could be the fourth highest in the past 20 years.

Perillat says he had thought the new COOL rules would have seen that number drop.

Looking ahead, the Canfax manager doesn't see a significant shift in expansion of the Canadian beef breeding herd in the short term.

He's expecting the main fundamentals will continue in 2015 - low cattle numbers, affordable feed prices and a weak loonie.

While not counting on a big rally, Perillat does feel 2015 Canadian cattle prices should be sustained and maybe move a little higher.
