Scotiabank Economist Has Good News For Agriculture

Scotiabank Economist Aron Gampel says the longer term outlook for agriculture continues to brighten.

He says there will still be cycles impacted by weather and other factors.

However, he argues a gradually improving global economy and new trade deals will provide strong and sustained markets for quality foodstuffs going forward.

Gampel was one of the presenters at this year's Ontario Federation of Agriculture convention.

He says economists consider agriculture to be a strong producer going forward.

He suggests that could help support long-term farmland values.

And Gampel told OFA delegates long term interest rates - critical for equipment and capital project investments - will probably remain low at least into the second half of next year.

Gampel says those are the rates that come into play when farmers and other businesses look at equipment purchases and capital projects.

Gampel says that's being helped by government and industry moves to actively promote global markets for Canadian agri-food products.
