A Poultry Pathologist with the University of Guelph told producers at this week's Poultry Update in Brodhagen that while the Avian Flu outbreak in B-C is not a threat here, it should serve as a reminder that bio-security is an on-going issue and complacency has a price.
Doctor Marina Brash did point out that a bronchitis outbreak that surfaced in Ontario a couple of years ago is now under control and was restricted to Ontario.
Doctor Brash also remarked that small urban flocks of birds tend to have a wider range of health issues than larger commercial flocks.
She says that's partly because they're outside and have more interaction with wild birds but also because they roam free on the ground and she points out the ground can actually be a carrier of disease for several years.
