More Neo-Nic Reduction Proposal Reaction

Two more farm groups have responded to the province's neo-nic acreage reduction proposals - one in favour, one opposed.

The National Farmers Union welcomes the move.

Vice President Ann Slater accuses the Pest Management Regulatory Agency of taking a risk management approach which benefits chemical companies by continuing to approve neo-nics for use on Canadian crops.

The NFU had told the Senate Standing Committee on Agriculture and Forestry earlier this year that there should be a moratorium on the use of neonic treated corn and soybean seed in Ontario and Quebec.

The Farm Action Now coalition opposes the new regulations.

Chair Craig Reid argues actions already taken by the industry have helped reduce bee mortality by 70 per cent.

Farm Action Now says the provincial proposals signal a shift away from a sound science and evidence-based regulatory environment.

The coalition includes Grain Farmers of Ontario, Ontario Bean Growers, Ontario Canola Growers Association , Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association , Ontario Pork and Seed Growers of Ontario.
