Province Dropping AgriStability Requirement For RMP

The province is dropping the requirement that farmers enrol in AgriStability to take part in the Ontario Risk Management Program.

Agriculture Minister Jeff Leal says they're doing that at the request of the Ontario Agricultural Sustainability Coalition.

The Coalition has been working with the ministry to do a detailed review of the Risk Management Program, first created in 2011.

From that, OASC concluded the current program is far superior to any other alternatives in creating jobs, bankability and predictability.

However, that same review showed the mandatory requirement to also enroll in the federal AgriStability program was doing more harm than good.

That was based on cuts to the AgriStability program and other challenges with the way it's currently operating.

OASC Chair Henry Van Ankum says his group is pleased the Minister has listened to and acted on their concerns.

Ontario Pork Chair Amy Cronin says the move addresses a growing concern that problems with AgriStability would lead to farmers opting out of both programs.
