Two people charged after recovery of $106K in stolen property

Two people are facing a lengthy list of charges after an investigation into stolen property that spanned two counties and saw over $100,000 in property recovered.

The Grey Bruce OPP says the investigation spanned locations in Grey and Dufferin counties, and was conducted with the Dufferin Community Street Crime Unit and Grey Bruce OPP Crime Unit.

In early July, police began investigating a series of break-and-enter thefts throughout the region. On July 15, a stolen Ford F650 U-Haul truck was located in the Melancthon Township area and linked to the ongoing investigation.

On July 16 just after 8 a.m., Dufferin OPP officers responded to a suspicious vehicle report on Southgate Road 4 in Southgate Township. Two people were arrested at the scene, and a search of the U-Haul truck they were in led to the recovery of numerous tools and items reported stolen from a recent break and enter in Meaford, along with other break-in tools.

Police then initiated a search warrant at a property in Melancthon Township. A stolen 18-foot flatbed trailer was located and seized. The total estimated value of property recovered during the investigation is $106,000.

A 51-year-old from Southgate and a 44-year-old Shelburne resident are both facing numerous charges including possession of property obtained by crime. Both accused were released from custody and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on August 21.
