Members of the Kingsbridge community have been recognized for their work in re-purposing the former St. Joseph's Church into the new Kingsbridge Community Centre.
Centre Director Jennifer Miltenburg says they were the recipients of a National Trust of Canada Award for Transformative Projects. “It is a exemplary example of the places and people that contribute to the quality of life and the sense of place and we are showing that heritage places are viable. We took a closed church and re-purposed it as the Kingsbridge Centre.”
Miltenburg says they got possession of the church in 2015 and shortly after the upstairs was opened and operated as a cultural centre. “The upstairs has been open and operating as a cultural centre, so we have theatre, music, sometimes speakers. We have community events there, community barbeques, things like that. And this August, we finally got, after four years, the basement completed.”
Miltenburg says women's groups are using the basement; they're hosting wedding receptions and parties there; and next year they hope to make it centre for seniors and for young people.
