Targeted Neo Nic Approach Worries Fruit And Veg Grower

John Kelly says his concern about the government's proposed neo nic policy was not addressed at last week's industry consultation in Guelph.

Kelly is with the Ontario Fruits and Vegetable Growers Association.

The government proposal would limit the use of neo nics to fields where there was a present or potential pest threat to crops.

Kelly wants to know what happens when that threat materializes after the crop is in the ground.

He argues a farmer in that situation could face devastating losses.

Kelly says that's why seed treatments are used - to prevent those kinds of losses.

While he asked that question at last week's Guelph consultation session, Kelly says he didn't get a satisfactory answer.

Kelly wants to know what happens if that threat doesn't materialize or isn't detected until after the crop is in the ground.
