Minto's Budget Means Higher Taxes

Minto passed its 2015 budget Tuesday, which when combined with the county and board of education, will add about $48 or 1.7 per cent to taxes on a home worth $202,000.

The town’s increase to the tax levy is 3.6 percent.Minto is spending almost $7 million on capital projects including $1.4 million for the rebuild of Harriston’s main street this summer. The budget also adds almost $600,000 to reserves.

Finance Chair Mary Lou Colwell said the budget is realistic and puts a lot towards infrastructure.

“I think it’s a fair budget and we’re going to do $7 million on capital," says Mayor George Bridge. "We’re going to borrow a little bit, but by the same token, rates are good and we’ll get some of this infrastructure deficit looked after.”
