The City of Owen Sound hopes to reduce electricity consumption by 64 per cent by converting to LED technology.
The city will be working with Local Authority Services and RealTeam Energy to upgrade all 1,972 street lights to the Light Emitting Diode system.
LED's last up to five times longer than high pressure sodium bulbs. That means annual maintenance costs will drop by about 80 percent.
The city estimates it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 13-hundred tonnes over the life of the fixtures. The sodium fixtures will be recycled to recover hazardous mercury.
