Barn fire south of Chatham claims life of horse

One horse is dead after a barn caught fire south of Chatham.

At around 8:50 p.m. on Tuesday, firefighters were called to Eighth Line where they found a barn fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters were told there might be livestock in the building, with all but one horse being found safe in a nearby pasture.

Crews were able to contain the fire to the barn, however, it still suffered around $400,000 in damage.

At this time, it's not believed the fire was started deliberately.

This was the second fire that crews in Chatham responded to on the day.

At around 4 a.m., a two-storey home on Colborne Street caught fire.

Fortunately, no one was in the home at the time.

It's believed the fire caused around $50,000 in damages. The exact cause is still unknown at this time.
